First real edit ever. Half behind the scenes, half getting into video

The past few weeks I've been doing a lot of video instead of stills. I still shoot a lot of stills but I just feel like getting my skills up in video for a bit just so I can do both properly. I'll be doing my best to shoot more big mountain now that the snow pack is building and the landings are filling out. So now I guess enjoy some video and get shreddin'.

There's something magical about snow.

I have been around snow for years and I was thinking just now that I have no explanation as to why snow makes people so stoked. Maybe it's the fact that it's rare and only shows up a few times per year but I don't think that's enough of an explanation. People get REALLY stoked and I don't think they wouldn't get that stoked on something just cause it's kinda rare. Maybe it's the way it feels and that you can make things out of it? Everyone enjoys creating things so that could be it? I don't know I'm just throwing things out there and typing while thinking to be honest. Either way my point is that snow is awesome and it agrees with the lens of a camera like nothing else.The shadows created by untouched snow or the contrast of the absence of light inside footprints or ski tracks; The way that fresh snow on the trees can make a mountain look 10 times bigger than usual. I love how after it snows the world looks different entirely and after you think that you've shot every angle of an area snow can turn it into a whole new thing. I went up grouse for the first time a few days ago and took some pictures. It felt like I was relapsing on a drug or something. I immediately was a bagillion times more stoked on shooting and the epicness that this season should bring. Oh and I got a Canon 7D and I'll be shooting video in case I haven't already told you. STOKED! So ya here's the pictures that got me so stoked on snow and mountains and winter and skiing. Expect better but I'm also kinda digging these ones.

And here's the first video with the 7D. It was just a fun little thing, not meant to be good or anything but the good videos will come soon.

Double Take

Do you ever look at something once and think it's crap then look back at it after a while and think it's awesome?

Well The past month I've done that several times with several photos. I wrote off a picture a long time ago as a shot that just didn't compete with the rest of the batch all because it wasn't what my idea of what a good photo was at the exact point in time. After a while of shooting photos and learning new things and getting a completely fresh perspective on what makes a good photo I noticed that that shot that I wrote off months before was actually, in my opinion, one of my top 5 shots.

My idea of what a good shot was didn't come from a theory lesson about the "laws" of photography but instead came from inspiration and my knowledge that breaking the rules can make a much better shot than when you follow them. So pretty much what I'm trying to say, to people who are getting into photography and reading my blog in hopes that maybe someday I might post something educational, is research. Not books about what makes a good photo but other people's work. Brilliant photographer's work. The internet is awesome so use it. Find a photographer who really inspires you and check his or her website or blog every so often to see the progression of their shots. Study their style and pick apart their photos. Try to figure out how it is that they made each of their photos.

And after all that research don't just copy each of their photos but try to apply those techniques to your own shots and improve on what they do. Also try to find multiple photographers so that you end up with a different style or else you will find that it's a challenge to not copy them. You want a unique style but also a style that appeals to the masses, unless you want no one other than yourself to like your photos, so in order to do that you need to learn the regular and then improve upon it. (That part might not have made sense). But either way what I'm trying to say is that I have changed my view on what I want to see in a photo by researching other photographers incessantly and in my opinion it improved my photographing abilities so take my advice or not, I hope it somehow helps.

This one my brother pointed out all the good things about and got me to like so I guess my point doesn't really apply to it. But I still looked back and decided it was awesome.

This is one that I thought was going to be awesome on my camera but then as soon as it got on the computer I decided it sucked. I still thing it sucks.

This is the one that I was originally talking about that I took inspiration for. Check out Chase Jarvis' work and you might see a bit of a resemblance? I'm not sure though.

The last one below I hated because I automatically put it into black and white. The cool thing to me on this one is that I edited it in black and white then just turned it to colour and left it.

So now that that's all said and done let me know what you think of these shots or even let me know if you've had a similar experience. If you have then let me know what it was and I'll probably post it on the blog with your permission.

New Shots and a Preview of a Rough Shot that will be Perfected

My friend Trevor Robson did an interview of me for his broadcasting media class so I took some shots of him while we were at it. Black and white shot is my friend Shamus and it was taken at the latest Coalition show. You should all check out the Coalition's music right there. They have a new album coming out shortly and i'll be posting an update about it later on. It's gonna be awesome! so the last photo is the preview of a shot i'll be re-doing later in the week. We had very minimal light and it the rider (Jeff Currie) understandably, didn't want to hit the big drop in the dark so we settled for this one. When I get the shot I'll do another post. Hopefully we can get some video footage of it as well. I'm going to do my UVIC weekend post separately in a few minutes. Goodbye for now!

Video Beginning

As I said in my last post, "iphones are so freaking cool!". My friend Aeron brought one out to the dirt jumps when I was taking some photos for a couple friends and took some video of the riding and various things that went on during the shoot. It's a super short clip and there isn't much info about the shoot at all but it was a first try and it can be improved. If you want to see some in-depth video as to what I do on shoots then let me know and i'll make it happen. I also was up in whistler for the weekend and I didn't take any action shots but I have a few landscapes and such to throw up, so without further ado here's the goods!

Today Aeron Mathew and I went for a ride up on Seymour mountain. We took a few pictures along the way. Also on the way home we took some pictures with Aeron's iphone which will be in the next post. Portrait Shots + an Update on Life

So I haven't posted in a while since i've been so busy doing nothing important with my life but having a ton of fun, so now it is time for a blog post. Tonight I saw an amazing show at Scratch Records and no, I did not take any pictures. The bands were Half Chinese, Student Teacher and Role Mach and I'm not gonna pick favorites or anything but Half Chinese and Role Mach were especially good and Role Mach was brilliant. The night was perfect and I saw tons of awesome people on the way home/at the show such as Jean (DJEAN) Lavigne, Trevor Robson, Christina Casperson, my very own brother Fred Hawley and many many more. Since I'm linking you to EVERYTHING important in this world during this post then I might as well link you to one last thing which I think is a very inspiring video.

It pretty much kicks every kid in the balls who ever said "You only take good pictures cause you have a nice camera. If I had a camera that good I could totally take better photos than you." Here's the video! That's all the bad-vibe-ranting I'm going to do throughout this post because this is supposed to be a Life-is-amazing-and-you-should-enjoy-every-second-possible-of-it-post. Since I promised you all some portraits, I now have some portraits to show to you all. They now feel very insignificant compared to the ones in the video; but anyway I might as well throw them out there for you all to see so hopefully you will like them and it will brighten your day. It was a lot to read and a lot to write but hopefully you enjoyed it. Goodnight.

Alaska

I got back from Alaska yesterday after 7 days of sitting on a boat doing nothing much more than eating and sleeping.

I used to play a computer game when I was a little kid called the Yukon Trail. I played it a lot so I remembered, pretty much photographically, every place and person in that game. When we got to Skagway I was imagining dirt roads and old saloons everywhere and to my surprise I wasn't too far off. Although the buildings aren't the same ones that stood in the 1890's the city has been re-built to try to replicate the saloons, brothels and stores from the time of the gold rush. Ketchikan was slightly more modern and a fishing town but just by looking at it you could tell that the town held a lot of history. Glacier Bay was incredible. The Ice all around the ship as we slowly circled the bay, passing huge glaciers and steep slopes was pretty surreal.

Although the experience of visiting Alaska was awesome, I did get extremely bored on the ship at times since there were not many activities and the average age of everyone on the ship was about 98 years old. If I were to visit Alaska again it would have to be during winter with skis and a helicopter. I took a lot of pictures so I won't be posting all of them but I'll put up the best ones. Here they are! Sailing number 2 and Kayaking

I've done a few trips over the past few weeks. One was a sailing trip back to otter bay to hang out with the parents for a weekend and almost as soon as I got home it was off to the Adams river for the first kayaking trip in about a year. Both trips kicked ass in their own ways and I say this about every paddling trip but it was the best trip I've had in a while. I didn't actually take any shots of actually kayaking... in fact I didn't really take many pictures at but I did manage to take some pictures while on the sailing trip. Here are all of the shots I managed to snag amidst all the paddling and good times on those two trips.

Recently I did some work for an organic cotton clothing company called Nate Organics. These guys make some great clothing while helping the environment at the same time. I'm pretty sure that it could eventually start inspiring other clothing companies to go more green and in the end, help reduce the amount of damage big corporate companies do to our planet. Fashion photography course part 2

The shooting part of the fashion photography course is now over and I really wish it wasn't. I had an amazing time over the past few weeks with this course and if I could do this for another 6 months I would enjoy every minute of it. The people I met were very friendly and interesting to talk to, Vic Penner, the pro photographer teaching us, was incredibly helpful, interesting and generally a nice guy to hang out with. He really dug my shots and when a photographer, who has made a big name for himself in the industry, tells you that your shots are amazing and that you're gonna go somewhere with photography, there's no way you can't be overjoyed. After a week of praise I am more stoked than I have ever been on making a career with my camera. I have to give a huge thanks to all the models because they were amazing. They made the shots entirely and dealt with my complete lack of an idea of what to tell them to do. I am pretty happy with my shots, I'm excited to see what the north shore news thinks of them and what the fashion design company thinks of them. Fashion photography course

The past week I have been doing a fashion photography course which I was selected to do by my high school photo teacher. The first day was very intimidating and helped me realize that I know absolutely nothing about fashion photography so that night I did some self portraits just to remind myself that I can do it. The next few days were awesome. The professional photographer, Victor John Penner who is a hugely successful photographer from North Vancouver gave me so incredibly flattering feedback and made me want to try harder than ever before to really go for it as a photographer. I met a bunch of awesome people at the course and I can't wait for the next class in two weeks which I guess is judgement day because we have to do a big fashion shoot with pro models to see who gets there work into the north shore news and who just gets some awesome teaching out of the class. Here are the shots that I got during the class and then the self portraits. They are more head shots and they were purely for practice, I have no aspirations or becoming a model and I will not start wearing a blazer and fedora around all the time. Don't worry.

About a week ago there was a series of big storms which brought tons of new snow. It was almost as if the season had restarted just in time for it to end. Jordan, Harrison, Derek and I had one of the best days of the season. Here are the shots to prove it.

Busy Busy Busy

The past few weeks have been pretty stressful and busy, partly caused by my own ambitions but none-the-less I've had a lot on my hands. I've started the mountain biking season with some shoots with a good friend who goes by the name of Cam Hilts. He's put together a team of talented downhill mountain bike racers for the year in order to get their names out in the industry and really just do something productive. Luckily he has so far been taking me along with them in order for me to get my name out there as well. This could be amazing if it actually works out and so far it seems like it'll be absolutely wonderful.

People have been telling me not to dive into things and commit myself to jobs that might not pull through but I have decided to ignore them because in my opinion if you don't put yourself out there and take big risks then you'll never succeed. (I know it's pretty cliche but it's the truth). So at this point I haven't really lost much only gained from most of my risks so I'm just going to keep going and maybe someday it'll bite me in the ass but I would rather take those risks and have a good time than sit around at home doing nothing or go to school for something I will never actually enjoy. My friend Giuliano has repeated many many times before taking risks the frase "You only live once" so at this point I'm taking that, putting everything on the table and doing my best to spend the rest of my life doing what I love. I'm hoping that the past few weeks will bring something good, but either way I still proved to myself over the past few years that I can have a good work ethic and complete most of my personal goals.

That tells me that I am in the perfect place that I want to be right now. Still having fun with my friends while preparing myself for the future. That is the place that I want and should be right now.

First bike shots of the season! Even though we've recently been getting some huge dumps of snow over the past week or so my mind is beginning to jump over to bike season. Cam Hilts, Cole Carter and I went out to do some shooting the other day. We were riding in the rain and the light was minimal so the shooting was tough. I'm a little critical of the shots so let me know what you think!

Today I was doing a research project for photo class on a guy called Cole Barash and when I was done I walked to the window of the library and I suddenly had an awesome idea for a photo. I quickly called Trevor, went to my house got my gear together, took some studio shots of trev and then headed back up to the library. We didn't go up with the intension of shooting the shot that I originally wanted, just to scout the location and get a couple other shots. I was more stoked than I've ever been on shooting and I'm gonna spend as much time as I need to get this other shot perfect. The picture that is yet to come is a surprise that you can look forward to probably this weekend. Here's a teaser:

A good sunsets, in my opinion is one of the best things that can happen to a photoshoot. They bring colour, sick lighting and a mood like none other to photos almost doing most of the work for you. Harrison Jack and I went up the mountain with no intention of really taking pictures. Maybe a couple of snaps but really just to have fun and ride but we just couldn't resist whipping out the camera and taking a little time to snipe off a couple nugs. This is what resulted:

Last day in Sun Peaks

Second/last day of skiing in Sun Peaks was a little crunchy but still really fun! Found a 15 or so foot drop, had some fun on that and skied all the way till the end of the day. There was a big slopestyle comp at the park so it was closed to the public but who wants to ski park when there's still fresh powder?! My mom got a shot of me doing a little drop and I think it's pretty good for her first time using my camera. Check it out!

Great first day skiing in Sun Peaks! The snow was amazing and the runs were awesome. As much as I would rather be in Whistler with friends it's still been fun skiing with my mom and a new friend called Liam. That's right I made a new friend. Pretty stoked. So here's the pictures. My mom had to go to sun peaks for work so I'm tagging along and hoping for the best. The snow is deep and the lift lines are small so it seems like a recipe for a damn good weekend of skiing. So it's taken me a little too long to get these pictures up but i figure better late than never so here comes a well overdue blog post. I've been super busy with shooting and blogging for Grousepark.com and taking pictures for a band called Crossing Lions. I can't say enough good things about these guys. Crossing Lions are a new band from north van who have a sort of indie pop rock style and play some really catchy tunes. That was a bad description but long story short they're rad! They consist of Pe Tolfo on guitar and vocals, Adam Vajda on guitar, Marek Olsen on base and James Higgins on drums. All of their songs are surprisingly professional and technical for a small time local band just playing small shows around town. I met up with them about a week ago and did a quick photo shoot, we got some pretty good shots out of it and they seem happy so I'm happy. They are currently in the studio laying down a demo I think...? don't take my word for it but no matter what they're working hard to give you some damn good music so keep checking in to they're facebook page to find out the latest. Whistler

This weekend I had to get away from Grouse and headed up to Whistler with Jason (Frodo) McFarlane, Kyle Jasper and Matt Whelan. We headed to the park first and it was absolutely perfect! We were having way too much fun to shoot so we waited until about the 8th lap to take out the camera and knock off a few shots. After shooting we went up to the peak and even after about a week since the last storm there was still a decent amount of powder to float on! We ended the day on a good note and drove back to Van stoked on skiing and now, after some editing and a bit of creative thinking, I've finally got some new shots for you. Here they are:

My good friend DJean has been making some new mixes lately. He's got some really good stuff which I will link you to in a later post. Since he is trying to promote himself I figured why not get some promotional shots to help with promotion? So I set up a little studio and with some creative minds working together we did (In my opinion) a pretty decent shoot. Adam Vajda and Cole Basin (Alter T'z) were also there so i took some shots of them as well. Other news is that I just got recruited to Grouse Mountain's blog crew so I'll be doing most of my posts on that blog from now on. Grouse Park

Hey all, so tonight me and a few friends hit up the Grouse park for some night shredding. I started shooting as soon as I got up there, then traded off and did some skiing instead of shooting, landed some 3's and went to the chalet for some food and drink. Good night all together till it started to rain so we went home. Here's the shots!

Callaghan Lodge and Whistler

I've been gone for the past 5 days enjoying the snow of Whistler and the Callaghan valley and now I am more than ready to go home and rest my tired, sore body... and then party hard on new years of course! So i'll start with cross country skiing in the callaghan valley. Just a few minutes out of whistler there is one of the coolest places I have ever been in BC. It's a vast landscape filled with deep snow, not too many people and an awesome lodge if you need somewhere to stay. We cross country skiied for 3 hours and right as we thought the trail would never end we came over the last hill to find the Callaghan Lodge. This place was sick! It was a hotel in the middle of a huge valley which offered breakfast, lunch and a 5 course meal...or should I say feast! There was a ping pong table which doubled as a pool table and various other little games that we could use to amuse ourselves in between eating and sleeping. So that was inside the lodge. Outside the lodge there were steep untouched powder valley's just begging to be heli-skied! Next time I go to the valley it will hopefully be by helicopter because it was literally just steep, untouched, wide open, ridges with cornices all over and a huge run out at the bottom!

So after the two days of luxury we headed back down the mountain, taking the steep hard way where there were many crashes but great times none the less. In the parking lot we parted ways with the other skiers who came with us and headed off to whistler.

The first day of skiing on Blackcomb was amazing! What a way to spend christmas day! My brother Fred and I headed up seventh heaven and found some fun little drops and jumps, had our first reminders of the fact that we hadn't broken in our ski legs yet and got some pretty good shots.

Boxing day we took the day off and went shopping. The "HUGE" boxing day "Sales" were pointless because everything was still stupidly expensive and Fred was the only one who bought anything. I really regret taking that day off.

The third day was a pretty standard day. We just had a good day of skiing, then hung out with my friend Cam Hilts later on and walked around the village. Oh! and I got some pictures printed on canvas for my family's condo on Blackcomb.

On the last day I ran into Jordan Manley who is an amazing photographer who's website you should check out: www.jordanmanley.com, said hi and thanked him for helping me out with any obstacles I've come across with my photography and then met up with Kyle Jasper. We took a few runs through the park, took some shots, met up with Tamo Campos and a bunch of other buddies and ended up moving on to lunch back at Glacier Creek. So In the end the day involved a lot of waiting around but in the end somehow ended up being pretty awesome. I skied the last few runs with my family and ended the day on a tired but good note at Blacks restaurant with burgers and some good old Coca-Cola. That night we saw the movie Sherlock Holmes which kicked ass!! Go see it! I'm gonna see it at least one more time!

So that was it for our trip. The next day we packed up and went home early because my Grandpa broke his ankle and had to go down to the hospital in vancouver. I was happy to be home and I'm definitely going to be doing a lot of leg workout so that I can ski for a whole 7 days in row without being dead tired by the end. I guess now all there's left to show are the shots from the trip. Hope you like them!

So today I took some promotional shots for the coalition. I met up with the band +Sarah Lubbe in Safeway which was super convenient because both Tera Incognita (Sarah and Will) and the Coalition (Dylan, Sina and Will) are going to be playing a show together soon so now they have pictures of both bands together to promote that. As always it'll be a kick ass show and now it can be even better now that they have pictures for it. So back to the coalition shoot.... Sina borrowed a shopping cart from Safeway, we went to Will's, got a fire going (in the fire place) and took a whole load of pictures. In the midst of all this there was much laughter, many jokes and a fun time was had by all! Oh and the pictures turned out alright but they could use some fine tuning.

So not an awful lot has happened since my last post, just been up grouse skiing, not shooting and other than that just hanging out with the coalition. Got a few shots today which you will see bellow, should get some shots tomorrow if I go up the mountain and finally, on friday, if everything goes as planned, there should be some banger portraits of the coalition. So keep checking back throughout the rest of the week and hopefully you'll get some eye candy. Keep your fingers crossed for more snow! see ya later!

In the studio with the coalition

Last night I went to the Arc of the Universe studio with Will Hodgins to meet up with the other 2 members of the coalition, Dylan Stickel and Sina Nazarian. After a long drive from North Van all the way out to Surrey we arrived at a house with what looked like a huge garage. When I got inside this big "Garage" I found out that it was actually a huge incredibly luxurious recording studio. I went into the room with all of the instruments and set up my stuff. I was quickly handed some of the best tea I've ever drank which definitely helped the workflow. The pictures came out alright and there's going to be more to come in a few days so keep checking back. Soon there should also be a bunch more shots of the coalition so actually keep checking back for the next couple of weeks! Here are a few shots from the night.

the best day ever

So today I skipped school and headed on up to whistler to do what you ask? To assist a photographer called Adam Clark on a shoot for skiers such as Sage Cattabriga-alosa, Ingrid Backstrom and Ian McIntosh. My job was to carry a big flash around called an Elinchrom Ranger which, at the beginning felt like it weighed about 30-40 pounds, unfortunately by the end of the day the pack felt like there had been a midget added to its contents. My legs stopped working and I had to really push myself to keep skiing. I only had one minor spill and i supposedly made an awesome save, keeping the flash dry and safe, while sliding down spanky's ladder on my back. Sage, Ingrid and Ian are some of the nicest most welcoming people you'll ever meet and they all sent it huge!! We did a couple laps of Spanky's, shot a few cliff drops and Adam did his job very well and got a ton of killer shots. The day was one of the best days I've ever had, let alone one of the best shredding days in whistler. Thanks guys for an amazing experience I learned so much and had an awesome time! See ya!!

Nothing Happening

So not much has been happening lately in my world so I haven't updated the blog but soon my life will be filled with interesting stuff to talk about. Last sunday I went skiing with a few buddies, threw down the first backflip of the season and tried a new trick. This trick was a rodeo 5, didn't work out too well, but I promise that it will happen by the end of the season and i'll get video and a photo to prove it! I would have brought my camera up the mountain with me but it was crazy foggy so there was really no point. This season I'm hoping to have some pretty solid shots, maybe a mag cover or something along those lines and hopefully I'll actually get a job! So if you have stopped checking the blog because I took so damn long to update it then I'm awfully sorry and by the time the rain stops on grouse you can expect new shots every few days...or once a week at the least. I was out at UBC yesterday taking pictures for two events at the same time and on the same day. You would think that would be pretty hectic but it really wasn't I just didn't have much time to properly set up and I didn't have all the gear I needed. None the less, I got some ok shots but not the best ones possible. The two events were the Redbull UBC rail Jam and the other was a research presentation day for the medical students. My friend Jess who was helping me out with what i had to do at the medical thing was really nice and helped me get everything done really quickly so that I had time to go shoot the Rail Jam. I had fun and got some ok shots here's some of the best from both events. As I said before, I didn't have all the proper gear so I couldn't take the best pictures possible and I had no time to set up flashes and such at the rail jam. Here's what I got:
